Geofysikernes studentaften, UiO

Ambient noise tomography at the Oseberg oil and gas field, North Sea
v/Charlotte Bruland, veileder Valerie Maupin, UiO

A rather recent technology has emerged showing that noise recorded by seismic sensors can be used to characterize the seismic structure in the area where the sensors are located. This technique is called ambient noise tomography. In this project, cable data from seismic sensors placed on the seafloor above the Oseberg oil and gas field is used to characterize the near-surface in an area used for waste disposal.

Daily cubesat imagery to observe and assess processes in the cryosphere

Satelitt

Earth observation satellites have change in the last years from the size of a minivan to fit in your backpack. Currently, 150+ cubesats orbit in space and take pictures of the entire Earth's surface, every day, with 3 meter resolution. This is an unique opportunity for gaining knowledge of the Cryosphere, as we are now able to observe fast changes on a large scale. In this presentation several highlights will be given to illustrate this new era of remote sensing.

An analysis of an extreme weather event

During Christmas 2016 an extreme weather event occurred and influenced the local infrastructure in Norway. At the same time three additional instruments (Multi-Angle Snowflake Camera, Precipitation Imaging Package, and a Micro Rain Radar) were installed at the Haukeliseter measurement site during winter 2016/2017. These instruments are used in an optimal estimation retrieval to estimate the snowfall accumulation at the ground. In addition, MEPS got operational in November 2016. Preliminary comparison between MEPS and surface measurements show an overestimation of snowfall accumulation with longer lead time.
